The measurement of engine and vehicle exhaust emissions and the development of measurement techniques were pioneered by staff at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). Having now accrued more than 40 years of emissions research and development, SwRI continues to set the bar with new methodologies of characterizing engine exhaust constituents. As a global leader in the measurement of fine, ultrafine and nanoparticles, SwRI's team of experts in particulate emission measurement and dilution system design offers clients a broad range of capabilities for understanding and measuring exhaust particle mass, number, and size distribution.

The activity specializes in performing programs that address emissions reduction, efficiency improvement, and improved compliance durability. Our laboratories are capable of operating on a variety of fuels, including:

  • Gasoline
  • Diesel
  • Natural gas
  • LPG
  • Hydrogen
  • Other low-carbon and no-carbon fuels

Engines up to 6,000 horsepower have been operated on multiple fuels. Additionally, SwRI operates a portable emissions test facility that can be used for a variety of programs. There are currently twelve HD diesel engine transient cells in operation compliant to US Part 1065, European ECE-49 and ISO 8178 procedures.
